The "MIND" of Mankind
Human Imagination - the source of Mankind's tremendous power.
Chapter 6
DOMINATION PLUS IMAGINATION
Throughout the animal kingdom domination plays an important role in
determining the social and territorial order of the animals within the group and with the
other animals outside its group. Coupled with the power of imagination, the domination
instinct increased immensely. The hierarchy that had existed for the humanoids took on
new imaginative meaning after the transformation. Dominant males became leaders,
chiefs, kings. When a tribal language became sufficiently sophisticated some of the more
imaginative people became storytellers, medicine men, priests, etc.. Kingdoms and
priesthoods were created separating the classes of people more and more. Domination
became the name of the game.
The animals and environment no longer provided much of a challenge. Mankind
had survived the cruel elements of the ice ages. Animals were now killed as needed for
food or kept as pets at home sites. Mankind could handle the environment pretty well,
inventing new shelters, clothing, fireplaces, etc. Famines and disease were a constant
challenge to mankind's welfare and helped keep its population growth in check up to about
the seventeenth century when new technology in farming and healthcare began to allow
the human population to expand rapidly.
After the transformation, domination and territorial instincts took on new
imaginative meaning. The thing that offered these “new human beings” their greatest
challenge was the desire to dominate other humans. What a tremendous challenge that was
and still is. Domination pervades every facet of human life. Economic, political, religious,
international, national, tribal, local, family, etc., all jockey for dominance.
Most sports, people engage in or games they play, the desire to dominate their
opponent is paramount. There is a natural desire to show they are stronger, faster, smarter,
more skillful or whatever. Boxers try to smash their opponents into unconsciousness,
wrestlers try to pin their opponents shoulders to the mat. Poker players try to take their
opponents money. Chess players try to outsmart their opponents. It goes on and on. In
Roman times, the contests were a matter of life and death when the gladiators fought to the
death. Today games and sports are a fun challenge and add a little zest to life. They arise
from the natural desire to dominate, a trait we inherited from our animal ancestors - plus
imagination.
The desire to dominate also has a much darker side. It has led to constant battles
between factions, tribes, nations, races and resulted in much of the grief people have
suffered throughout the history of mankind. Paleoanthropologists have found evidence
indicating a pronounced increase in mankind's violent cruel nature after the
transformation. Tribal fighting turned into major battles. War, killing, sacking, torturing,
raping, destroying one's neighbor with great imagination became the “new game” mankind
played and continues to play today with great ferocity. (Mankind's aggressive cruel nature
may have increased as the languages became more sophisticated and therefore the power
of its storytellers to create hate and anger in peoples’ minds also increased.) War is
mankind's ultimate “domination game”. It challenges the imagination to the limit. It all
arises out of the ancient animal instinct to be dominant, especially to control the females
in one’s territory. Besides the terrible killing - strategy, deception, bluffing, storytelling,
invention of new weapons, all play a part in this game.
An example of imagination at its best was, during World War Two, our
cryptographers were able to decipher the code of the Japanese navy. The resulting
information let our admirals strategically place, what was left of our fleet, in the right area
at the right time. This strategy was a significant factor in helping our navy win the battle of
Midway and other crucial battles in the Pacific. It helped turn the tide of the war in that
theater. The decoders were even able to pinpoint the location of Admiral Yamamoto (a
man of strong visionary powers) which resulted in his demise. Another example of great
imaginative deception was when some of our storytellers convinced Hitler that the Allies
were going to invade Normandy at Calais rather then, near Cherbourg. This caused the
Germans to hold their army back, waiting for the "real" invasion to begin at Calais. This
never happened of course and gave the Allies a chance to gain a foothold in France. It
insured the success of the invasion, probably saving thousands of lives and helped shorten
the war in Europe. These are just two examples of the imagination being used in
mankind's deadliest game.
Throughout the of history of mankind, battles were fought, tribes were conquered,
bloodlines, ideas, customs, languages, were intermingled, adapted, improved, some
became extinct. Slavery came into existence as a consequence of these battles and men's
desire to dominate and plunder. The vanquished either became slaves or were killed.
Slaves became a part of the merchandise to be traded and remained so up until recent
times. In Roman times, after a battle, slave traders who followed the Roman legions,
would buy the hapless vanquished people from the victorious soldiers for trade as slaves.
North American tribes played this war game by occasionally attacking and sacking
a neighboring village, killing the men and capturing the women (just as other tribes did all
over the world). They did not have a slave trade as far as I know. In ancient times the
Romans would sail their ships up the Rhone River into Gaul loaded with castes of wine to
trade for slaves. The Gauls would raid and capture people from their neighboring tribes
and then trade these captives for the wine. Around the tenth century the Vikings plundered
and pillaged Irish monastery and other European coastal towns capturing people to be sold
into slavery. (There was a big demand in the Byzantine Empire for slaves.) The Arabs sent
huge caravans into Africa for thousands of years capturing and trading slaves.
They still
practice slavery today in Mauritania and Sudan using their slaves for; labor, breeding and
sex. Around four hundred years ago the Portuguese began raiding the African coast
looking for natives that could be brought to the New World to sell as slaves. Many African
chiefs, motivated by the lure of easy profit, began raiding their surrounding villages,
capturing their neighbors and selling them to these traders. Everyone involved in this
ancient business (except the natives) found these endeavors to be very profitable. The
Spanish and English soon discovered this profitable business. They legitimated the
business and carried on slave trading for the next three hundred years.
Apparently anything that is "economically profitable" is a prime deciding factor in
human motivation. If it is necessary to make a profit or fight a war or whatever, the human
imagination will come up with some plausible reasons to carry on the task. Its conscience
will be appropriately submerged to accomplish the endeavor, no matter what it entails.
Slave trading had been a profitable business throughout human history. In the European
middle ages the various religious and political factions were too busy fighting each other
for domination, torturing and burning people at the stake to bother taking a position on
slavery, which was happening far away in the New World and was an ancient human
institution anyway. (They had their serfs and bond slaves).
Slavery was finally abolished, in this country, by fighting a great civil war that
nearly tore the country apart and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of our young men.
It was a mankind “game of domination” that had to be played out. In Cuba, the
government merely bought the slaves and set them free. Why didn't we think of that?
When men cannot settle their differences any other way, war is the ultimate
decider. As I write this, the contemporary tribes in Yugoslavia are engaged in a bloody
civil war undoubtedly influenced by their storytellers, desperately fighting for domination
of their territories, indiscriminately killing and raping, destroying each other just as they
did in the days of the Neanderthals. (Early in the 20th century archaeologists uncovered evidence
of mass killings that took place in the same vicinity in those ancient times.) This is the
same area that ignited World War One resulting in unspeakable suffering and the slaughter
of twenty million people. Its no wonder our leaders are extremely wary of becoming
involved in their mayhem again. Worldwide, so far in the 20th century about one hundred
million people were killed in wars, all in the name of political domination. I wonder what the next
century has in store for us.
Note: This chapter was written in 1996, before the turn of the 21st century. It didn't take us long to find out what the 21st century has in store for America and the world. On September 11, 2001 a radical religious group of Muslims declared war on America by sending captured airliners full of people into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon buildings killing thousands of people and starting the wars of the 21st century. I just hope that mankind will be able to survive these 21st century wars. We are living on thin ice - one miscalculation and it will be all over for life as we know it on our beautiful little planet.
Slavery as a form of complete domination of other people has been going on since
the time of the transformation. Someone had to do the work. Some of mankinds greatest
"accomplishments" were made possible by the enslavement and forced labor of men and
women. The great wall of China and the Egyptian and Central American pyramids are
monuments to these atrocities. In Egypt, recently discovered bones of these workers reveal
evidence of the harsh treatment they received. The Great Wall of China is said to be one
continuous graveyard of the slave workers who were buried beneath it.
Rome depended
upon slaves throughout its history. They worked the mines, served in households and built
the Roman empire. At one time nearly one half the population were slaves. The Mongols
brought their slaves, captured in earlier conquests, with them on their war expeditions.
They where the skilled craftsmen and artisans needed to build the bridges, catapults and do
whatever else was needed to carry on their conquests. The young women were shipped
back to Mongolia for whatever. They slaughtered everyone else.
Slavery finally started to decline when the industrial revolution began taking hold
and mechanical machines powered by steam became available to do the work. If it were
not for these machines many of us may still be working as slaves or serfs. The proliferation
of machines throughout the modern world has raised mankind's standard of living to the
high level it is today. It has given the common man a chance to enjoy living. The more
machines a country has (and energy to run them) the higher is its standard of living.
During World War II the German tribes over ran Europe killing and enslaving
millions of people. They worked their slaves to death in factories. Many German
households harbored slaves. Its possible that the German tribes are not any more demonic
then any other human tribe. The human imagination can justify just about anything it
wants to when it has powerful storytellers exerting their negative influence on people. The
German people who migrated to our country are fine upstanding citizens who have
contributed immensely to the progress and wealth of our country.
Perhaps when people
migrate away from their tribal lands, the tribal link is broken and they can then live
together with other people in peace. This seems to be the case in our country. Maybe the
storytellers, who dominate in the tribal lands by constantly keeping the hatreds stirred up,
are left behind. We are all part of the Mind of Mankind and therefore are all capable, of
committing these monstrous atrocities. (An evil storyteller can turn peaceful men into a
monsters, it happens all the time.) History clearly shows that given the right conditions and
influenced by evil storytellers, any tribe or nation with sufficient strength is capable of
horrendous deeds.
As I write this, African tribes in the small country of Rwanda are slaughtering each
other by the tens of thousands trying to establish which tribe will dominate. In South
Africa the white citizens are actually peacefully relinquishing the domination of their
country (after much worldwide pressure) to the black citizens via elections. A really scary
recent development has been the instability of Russia. I hope they have some positive
storytellers to guide them in their transition.
In Israel the Jews are trying to maintain
dominance over the Palestinians. In Ireland the Christian factions are fighting for
dominance. Unfortunately our world is filled with tribal hatred and the desire to dominate.
It doesn't seem like it will ever change. It is part of human nature. A large segment of
America's population is filled with refugees who have escaped from some form of tribal or
religious hate or were brought here as slaves.
At the present time with the weakening of the communism, many countries seem
to be reverting to their ancient tribal hatreds. Which tribes are going to dominate in certain
territories has to be determined. Yugoslavia is determining who will dominate through use
of force, while Czechoslovakia seems to have accomplished it by a peaceful referendum.
Worldwide, the best we can hope for is an uneasy truce where all nations are armed to the
teeth and to fight would be a complete disaster. This is our destiny unless some
imaginative innovator in the distant future is able to eradicate these "undesirable traits"
from mankind via genetic engineering. It would surely make for a more peaceful world.
War as the prime determinant of who is going to dominate who, has challenged
mankind's imagination more then anything else throughout its history. The history of
mankind is filled with a maze of battles and wars that have determined which tribes and
philosophies will dominate in their respective areas. The fear of being slaughtered by a
gang of invading madmen (warriors) has been paramount in peoples’ minds ever since
mankind has existed.
The need to survive and defend themselves has dominated
mankind’s anxiety throughout its existence. Imaginative defense and offense strategies
and weapons were continually invented and improved. Great castles and fortresses were
built for defense security. Catapults and cannons were invented to destroy these structures.
The stronger more imaginative, ruthless tribes conquered the weaker tribes and their
cultures prevailed - for a while.
The invention of gunpowder completely revolutionized warfare making it much
more deadly. The invention of the airplane, rockets and nuclear bombs have made the
"game" mankind plays become so deadly that it now threatens not only its very existence
but also the Earth's environment. Only time will tell whether the good side of mankind's
imagination will prevail over the evil side. It would be ironic if all the work done by our
early very distant cousins, those little single cell dynamos that painstakingly built our
beautiful world, was destroyed by mankind. We may be the "cancer" that finally kills its
host. Man is not a noble beast, the best that can be said about him is that he is an
imaginative paradox. Instead of “Homo Sapiens Sapiens” a more suitable name for
modern man would be “Homo Imaginative Sapiens”.
Mankind is made up of a vast majority of good people but history shows they are
easily influenced, dominated and manipulated by the storytellers. Storytellers have
tremendous power to influence other people into carrying out their evil wishes. It has
happened since the creation of storytelling and will continue as long as man has an
imagination. I feel one of mankind's greatest challenges is to try to suppress its "devils" as
much as possible and try to live in peace and harmony with each other and nature.
One of the first casualties of mankind's new imagination, was ironically, the
Neanderthals. Although being very close cousins of the modern humans, they apparently
lacked their vocal capabilities. Its very possible that they did not receive Our Special Gift.
Without an imagination they could not invent vocal word associations and hence
languages. They therefore would not have had the tribal storytellers needed to agitate
hatred of their foes and as a result fought defensive rather then aggressive battles. The
storytellers have always had the pivotal role of inciting enough anger and hatred in their
warriors to go out and commit their mayhem. Emotional anger and hatred is an exclusive
human trait. It may have been one of the crucial factors in the Neanderthals demise.
The Neanderthals, before the transformation, may have been the superior fighting
group, having a stronger physical frame and being more robust. They probably dominated
the modern humans and along with the help of the other animals, kept their population in
check for thousands of years. This could explain the "sudden appearance" of the modern
humans after the transformation took place. It is more likely that both groups evolved
contemporaneously from a distant common ancestor. Only after the transformation, when
the modern humans' imaginative power begin to manifest itself where they finally able to
challenge the Neanderthal's dominance. Vocal communication is one of mankind’s most
powerful tools.
For the next thousand or so years the Neanderthals and modern humans competed
with each other over territories and food. Many bloody battles occurred between the two
subspecies over this time span but in the end the imaginative power and ruthless ferocity
of the modern humans completely wiped out the Neanderthal subspecies. The fights were
not big battles, just families and small tribes fighting for territorial dominance. Similar to
before the transformation but now with their new weapons and tactics and emotional
hatred the outcome was different. Now modern humans nearly always prevailed.
Eventually, after constantly losing these battles over a long period of time the
Neanderthal's territory dwindled to almost nothing. They were not good planners in the
first place and they just could not compete anymore with these new humans. They finally
succumbed to their adversaries. They may have ended up being mankind's first slaves.
There may have been other subspecies that we do not know about that also met this
same fate. It was the first genocide committed by mankind, there have been many others
throughout the ages. (The tribes of Rwanda, having been incited by their storytellers, are
doing this right now.) Only the Homo Imaginative Sapiens hominids now remain on the
planet.
Over the millennia the physical appearance of the humanoid tribes, who had
become isolated from each other because of the vast area of the lands and topography, had
evolved to suit their particular environments. This began to occur long before the
transformation. The races of mankind have remained so closely related however, that any
fertile human being of any tribe on Earth can mate with any other of the opposite sex and
bear healthy children. The modern humans and the Neanderthals also undoubtedly mated
during this era but may not have been able to bear healthy offspring, their races being
genetically too far separated. If these two groups were able to bear healthy offspring their
genes are now a part of ours.
The Power Structure of America
Dominating or being dominated. determines how we live our lives. The following
text describes the various groups of people, both living and deceased that exert their
influence on contemporary life in America. This is the Power Structure of America, as I
see it.
The Ancient Storytellers and Innovators - These original philosophers and
innovators formed the basis of western civilization’s philosophies and technologies. They
were the all the imaginative people who contributed their ideas (political, religious,
technical, etc.) down through the ages. Later, the renaissance philosophers, European and
American, contributed their stories. All these ideas put together were the basis upon which
our forefathers built their subsequent philosophies that made possible the creation of this
nation.
Our Founding Forefathers - All the imaginative people (farmers, lawyers,
merchants, etc.) who, using the aforementioned ideas (right down to the most basic tools
such as the phonetic alphabet and Arabic numerals) created the fundamental principles,
philosophies and primary laws of our nation. Using these ideas and tools they hammered
out and authored the documents that would guide our nation into the future. These
documents are the guiding force of our country and even for other countries. Even though
these imaginative innovators are long gone, they are still the main power group that
inspires, influences and guides our nation down its path into the unknown.
The Contemporary Government Leaders - These are the citizens who are elected
to serve and carry on the policies and programs started by our forefathers (federal, state
and local). Their job is to; maintain and add to, the tremendous wealth of our public
infrastructure. Maintain strong military, police and fire protection. Maintain a positive
political, economic and intellectual climate for our citizens. Educate our children. Create
laws and regulations to guide and protect our; citizens, businesses, and environment.
Encourage research, such as space exploration, etc., that will carry us into the future. Be
fiscally responsible so that our future generations will not have bear the burden of our
present generation’s excesses.
The Scientists - These are the imaginative people from around the world who
delved into the secrets of nature and discovered its natural laws and relationships. They
opened the way for the inventors, entrepreneurs and the rest of the capitalists to take
advantage of their discoveries. They are the cornerstone of the wealth building process.
The Capitalists - The farmers (the original capitalists), entrepreneurs,
manufacturers, retailers, service businesses, inventors, investment bankers, commercial
bankers, creative innovators, artists, investors, venture capitalists, etc., who help create,
trade and sell, their products and services.
These are the dynamic power people, who together with the help of their workers and skilled craftsmen, create the wealth of our nation. We all live off the abundance created by their imagination and energy. They, under
the guidance and resources of our government, are the source of our wealth and the high
standard of living we have achieved. They create the food, tools, machines, products and
private infrastructure that we depend upon. They are the people who make things happen.
If we are to maintain our high standard of living we must make sure we do not stifle the
imagination and incentives of these dynamic people. Without them we would be a third
world country.
Supreme Court - (The politically appointed high priests of our country). These
lawyer/judges interpret the laws of our country. Their decisions whether good or bad
become the law of the land. (their terms should be limited, no citizen of this country
should have this power for life, its too much like being a king or dictator). Federal
Reserve Bankers - These banker/economists set the stage for the nation's economic
engine. They can cause a recession any time they want to, by setting high; short term
interest rates and bank reserves.
Government Bond Owners - This group, both foreign and domestic, has gained
tremendous power since our government started spending our future generation’s earnings
in the early thirties (deficit spending in peace time). As our national debt grows these
bondowners demand an ever larger slice of our country’s wealth. Increasing amounts of
money that could be spent for the benefit of our citizens now must be paid to this group.
This is putting constant pressure on our government to cut services or raise taxes. This will
continue at an ever increasing pace as long as we continue to issue bonds to cover the cost
of our extravagances. Ever larger portions of our wealth is being lost to foreign
bondowners due to our growing national debt and increasing trade deficits (they trade their
surplus dollars for the bonds). We must get it through our heads that we are a nation of;
past, present and future generations. We have no power over the past but we do have
power over the present and the future generations. We should handle this power with
extreme care!!
President - Manager of the country, head of the armed forces, appoints department
heads, signs bills into law or vetos them. As the country’s chief storyteller, he sets the
goals and policy of the country. Congressional Committee Leaders- These are the “power” congressmen who
wield great influence and determine the bills that will come up for vote.
Lawyers - They influence and draw up the bills that come before Congress.
Prosecute and defend the accused lawbreakers. Write most contracts for businesses and
people. They are a major beneficiary of the lawsuits they win. They act as lobbyists for
whom ever hires them. As judges they preside over our courts and render decisions. A very
powerful group of citizens!
The Storytellers - They are the major influence on the contemporary thinking of
the country. Their stories determine the mood and morals of the nation. They develop and
slant their stories any way they wish. Under our system of government they have great
freedom. It is up to the people to accept or reject the ideas they expound. They are the
news journalists, advertisers, writers, philosophers, clergy, politicians, authors,
composers, and moviemakers. (They are also our family, friends, peers and coworkers.)
The publishers and editors have the power to promote or reject the stories they receive.
Motion pictures, radio/television, telecommunications, video recording and photographs
were the powerful new storytelling media of the twentieth century and recently we have
added computers/software and the Internet. It has been a revolutionary century for the
storytellers!
Multinational & Military/Industrial Corporations, (domestic and foreign) They
are a powerful part of the capitalist's group. Their power extends far beyond our shores.
Through their lobbyists and PACs, they are a major influence on our lawmakers.
Political Parties - Republicans; mostly conservatives who want less government
and taxes. They are now trying to reduce the cost of government. Democrats; liberals who
want to distribute the conservatives’ wealth. They want the government to be able to
intrude into every facet of our lives. Under the Democrats, the power of the government
and its entitlements have grown tremendously in this century. At present, the party's power
lies in a coalition of feminists, African/Americans and labor union members.
Power factions - They are everywhere; lobbying, storytelling, bribing, trying to be
a dominant force. These factions come in all sizes and all flavors. Some of the more
visible power factions are the; liberals, conservative, feminists, blacks, businesses, the
military/industrial, unions, anti abortionists, veterans, NRA, religious, etc.. With the
advent of women's and blacks’ suffrage, the white conservative male voting block has lost
much of its power. This has resulted in major change in the political and economic course
of our country. We are now wallowing in a sea of well meaning social programs and
tremendous debt.
The American Family - This fundamental group has been under siege in the last
half of this century, largely by the feminists urging women to leave their traditional role as
the hub of the family, to get a job and leave their children in the care of others and the
Hollywood storyteller’s message for young women to be more sexually active without a
commitment in case a pregnancy occurs. These messages have sent the divorce rate and
children born without the benefit of a parental commitment soaring. (There are now, nor
never have been, any illegitimate children born on this planet, only irresponsible parents).
The Feminists - Women have made major moves up the power ladder since they
won the right to vote. As part of the liberal coalition they helped create a new but costly
society in America. Although they are now the majority they voted themselves special
privileges over their fellow citizens, (poor white males are the only adult group left out of
affirmative action).
The Environmentalists- These are the watchdogs of “Spaceship Earth” Although
a fairly new group they are becoming more and more important as the population of
mankind gobbles up an ever increasing area of the planet.
European Americans - For hundreds of years the Europeans came to this country
to escape the slavery of serfdom and religious persecution. In Scotland they were evicted
from their homes and land so the noblemen landowners could raise sheep. From England
to escape intolerable economic and religious conditions. From Germany, Italy, Poland and
the rest of Europe they came for the same reasons. The Irish came to escape starvation in
Ireland. The Jews came to escape thousands of years of slavery, persecution and
discrimination. They all came to build a better life for themselves and their families. There
was no welfare and they didn't ask for any special privileges nor were any of these groups
welcomed by the people who were already here. Each group suffered much prejudice and
discrimination when they came over (some of the first settlers in Virginia were massacred
by the local natives who did not want them encroaching on their territory. This mayhem
continued for the whole time our country was being settled). Each group, as they came
over, started with nothing and had to work and fight hard to feed their families and build
this country into the power it is today. These people are the backbone of our country.
When they are united in a common cause they are a power to be reckoned with.
(The Japanese found this out the hard way when they attacked Pearl Harbor to start World
War II.) Most of the time however, their power is directed every which way and so, is
mostly canceled out (unless they are a part of a special group).
Civil Service Workers and Bureaucrats - These are the people who run the
everyday operations of the government and provide us with all the essential government
services which are paid for by the capitalist's wealth generating capabilities. They are the
firemen, policemen, teachers, sanitation workers, administers and clerks, federal judges,
etc.. They have moved up the economic ladder in the last thirty years through collective
bargaining and now receive excellent salaries and benefits. The bureaucrats' numbers and
power have increased immensely in this century especially since advent of income tax,
social security, medicare, etc. They can now delve into every aspect of our lives. They
have truly reached the status of “Big Brother”.
Artists and Athletes - These are the musicians, painters, composers, storytellers,
actors, dancers, sport athletes, etc.. They are a vital part of the arts and entertainment
power structure that we take pleasure in listening to and watching. Their creative and
athletic abilities add great enjoyment to our lives. Some of them are extremely well paid.
Labor Unions - In the private sector they try to negotiate their workers a fair share
of the wealth that the capitalists create. They lost some of their power when the cost of
labor became too high and manufacturers began moving their operations to other
countries. NAFTA and GATT aggravated the situation. In the public sector the unions
have done very well through lobbying and negotiating since their entities do not have to
show a profit and they simply raise taxes.
Health Care System- They provide excellent health care expertise for our citizens
and have a powerful lobby to promote their interests. They seem to be able to charge their
customers what ever they want to. Their prices have skyrocketed since government and
private insurance money has become available.
The Armed Forces - These people are the greatest human killing force on the
planet. Fortunately for our country, they are honorable, loyal citizens and politically
neutral. Males - (young, mature) These are the young men who are drafted into the armed
forces whenever the country needs someone to fight and die for it. They have no power to
resist when they are called upon but have always done an extremely commendable job
when their services were needed.
The Religious - (ministers, priests, rabbis, etc.) These storytellers try to promote
their particular doctrines and guide their followers spiritually and morally. Its a hard job in
these times with so many immoral storytellers spinning their tales. They are not as
powerful in this country as in some other countries although some religious factions have
powerful voting blocks coming on the scene.
Academia - (teachers and college professors and their students) Most teachers and
professors have respected, good paying, cushy jobs to teach the next generation, do
research and travel. Some of the teachers in the grammar and high schools however, have
thankless jobs trying to teach pupils who do not want to be in school. It wasn't too far back
in time when these kids would have been working in factories and coal mines or out in the
hot sun picking cotton twelve hours a day. Maybe if they were put in their predecessor's
shoes for a couple of months they would appreciate their opportunities a lot more.
African/Americans - Through the determined efforts of; the newly created
Republican Party, President Lincoln, the voters who opposed slavery and the terrible
ordeals suffered, in the Civil War, by the Union troops, the slaves were liberated and
became citizens (a giant step up the power structure ladder). It was the worst war our
country has ever suffered, it nearly tore the country apart. Brother fighting brother. The
South was devastated in the loss of its young men and although the Union's ideas
prevailed, it was also a major loser. Over five hundred thousand of our finest young men
died or were wounded fighting for this cause. It was an appalling price to pay! The total
cost to the country, in this slaughter of its young men, to settle the issue of slavery once
and for all, was well over one million men (casualties on both sides). This would have
been equivalent to seven million young men of our present population. It is mind boggling,
the price that America was willing to pay to determine the fate of our nation and of
slavery. This terrible slaughter finally eradicated a festering cancer that had been plaguing
our country ever since its inception and paved the way for America's entrance into the
twentieth century.
On September 17, 1862, in a corn field, at the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest
battle of the war, the Union forces were finally able to stop the Confederate forces. This
show of strength and determination finally tipped the the scales in favor of the antislavery
power of our nation. From the time of the Declaration of Independence, up until this
fateful day, the proslavers were the dominant power in our country and (even though they
were largely responsible for creating it) made a mockery of this noble document. This
battle gave President Lincoln the confidence to declare the Emancipation Proclamation.
(Until this battle was fought, it was doubtful which way the war would go). It was another
decisive step in our revolution which had begun in 1776. Our country was on the verge of
finally becoming a true reality. Worldwide, slavery was finally on the wane, it had been a
human institution ever since the creation of mankind.
In the past forty years the blacks have fought their way to their rightful place on the
power structure ladder via litigation, boycotting, rioting, education and voting. Most of
their leaders however, continue to preach the same message, which is; that they suffered
the most discrimination and hardships of any group of people in the history of mankind,
that white people are the source of all their woes and that they cannot succeed on their own
without special government help and privileges. This message is an insult to their people,
inferring that they are somehow inferior to the rest of our citizens and cannot overcome
their obstacles without additional help from the government. The truth is, many groups of
people throughout history have suffered as much or more discrimination and hardships for
a much longer period of time then did our black citizens. Their message has had a
devastating effect on their young people (especially the young men) as evidenced by the
turmoil it has created in their families, schools and neighborhoods. Finally, their message
is an insult to the millions of white men (mostly poor) who fought (and died) so that they
could be free, and in this century, worked with them to help them move further up the
power ladder. They could not have done it alone. Until their storytellers began sending
positive messages to their young people, I'm afraid this situation will not change much.
The next step up the power ladder for these people will be; to accept responsibility for
their actions, to build up their credibility and integrity in the eyes of their fellow citizens
and establish safe prosperous neighborhoods that anyone will feel welcome and safe to
visit.
On their small sharecropping farms, as free farmers after the Civil war, the
exslaves produced over three times the amount of bales of cotton per acre, as their former
owners. This is a good indication of the potential these people have when they are given
the opportunity and put their minds to it. They have come a long way since since they were
rescued from slavery by the Union soldiers, some of whom were exslaves themselves.
They have exactly the same potential as everyone else. It is up to them to strive to reach
this potential and it is up to their storytellers to inspire and encourage them along the way.
The Hispanic and Asian Immigrants - These are the latest major population
groups to join our power structure ladder. They are mostly diligent hard working people
coming to America to carve out a better life for themselves just as the European
immigrants did. They should add greatly to our country's wealth and culture.
The Native Americans - These people were living the good life in this land until
they were invaded by the Europeans. (Some of their tribes enjoyed a democratic form of
governing long before the we adopted it.) Their braves fiercely tried to resist the
encroachment of the newcomers but were totally out numbered and out fought. If they
would have had a Ghenis Khan to organize and lead them, the outcome of this struggle
may have been totally different. (The Mongols used to have the Europeans shaking in their
boots). Presently they are either assimilated into the general population or living on their
reservations. They have their own power struggles on these reservations.
Our Posterity - This group does not have much power now, they are nearly at the
bottom of the power structu
re. They cannot vote, and depend totally on the good will of
the present generation to look out for their welfare. They will eventually inherit all the
assets and debt of the present generations, as they take over our country. To protect our
future generations, maybe we should have a Presidential cabinet member dedicated to
protecting the welfare of these future citizens. After all, they our are children, grand-
children, great grandchildren, etc., etc.!!
Minimum Pay Workers - These are the ubiquitous, indispensable people who
serve and make life worth living for all of us. Their life is a constant economic struggle.
Welfare Recipients - Women who are subsidized by the government to have babies,
people who make a career out of not working and people who need a temporary helping
hand from society.
The Underworld - The murky world of organized crime, drug dealers,
etc. They depend on violence, threats and bribes to keep their enterprises going. Convicted
Felons - Murderers, robbers, rapists, con men, etc. who are jailed at tremendous taxpayer
expense or sent back to the streets to continue their crime career. Their life is a total drag
on themselves and society.
The Bottom of the Power Structure.
